Preserving the Serbian Language Through Play and Tradition

Last weekend, another unforgettable children’s workshop titled “Mašta može svašta” (Imagination Can Do Anything) took place, bringing together little ones ready to dive into the magical world of literature, acting, and creativity. This time, the inspiration for our gathering was the famous poem “Golema repa” (The Giant Turnip) by Jovan Jovanović Zmaj.

Through this beautiful story of togetherness and perseverance, the children had the opportunity to showcase all their talents. Our little artists acted out the characters from the poem, bringing to life the grandpa, grandma, granddaughter, and their faithful dog, who all join forces to pull out the giant turnip. In addition to acting, the children expressed their creativity by coloring illustrations inspired by Zmaj’s verses.

Of course, we didn’t forget the well-deserved refreshments! To ensure they had enough strength for “pulling the turnip,” the little ones enjoyed healthy carrots, as well as their favorite treats – Smoki and Plazma biscuits.

A special focus of this workshop was on the immense importance of preserving and nurturing the Serbian language among the youngest. Through the verses of “Čika Jova Zmaj,” children enrich their vocabulary, develop oral expression, and connect with their cultural heritage in the most natural way – through play and laughter. Fostering a love for the mother tongue from an early age is key to preserving our identity, and workshops like this prove that learning a language can be the most beautiful adventure.

A big thank you to all the children and parents who took the time to come and brighten up this day! Your energy, smiles, and imagination are what give the “Mašta može svašta” workshop its true meaning.
